Supporting people with acquired brain injury and their families

Message from the Chairperson

Posted on Tuesday, 2 December 2014

Let me introduce myself, I’m Thelma Kingwill and I have been involved with Headway Gippsland Inc. since 1984.   I joined a small mutual support group for people with ABI and their families after our son suffered a traumatic head injury in a vehicle accident. I gained great comfort from the group as at that time I was feeling quite isolated and thought no-one could possibly understand what our family are going through.

Since then I have been involved in the Management of Headway and have pushed for the recognition that ABI is a unique disability that needs services tailored to meet the specific needs of the individuals and their families.  Over the years Headway Gippsland Inc. has grown to be a respected service provider and now provides many different services though out Gippsland.

After 28 years I retired in 2012 for a much needed rest.  I re-joined the Board in 2014, When Chairperson resigned in March I was nominated by the Board members to fill the position.  I am very proud of how the present Board of Management and the new General Manager, Jenelle Henry, have worked together to achieve so much in such a short time.

I have always been passionate about caring for the people with ABI and helping them to be accepted as part of the general community and acutely away of how difficult life for the carer can be as they meet the many challenges and life changing events.

Take care everyone and remember you are no alone.  Read the web page for contact numbers for the different services we provide.
