What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?
The NDIS is a fairly new way to support Australians with a permanent or significant disability.
Funding now goes directly to the person.
This means you have more choice about the supports and services to suit your needs.
The idea is to help you…
It is about taking steps early to find a better future.
The NDIS aims to improve the outcomes of those with a disability later in life by investing in the initial stages of their journey to better health.
You will get an NDIS plan
It will be tailored to you.
A plan will help make sure you get the support you need to make your own goals and then achieve them.
For example, your goals could be
- starting studies
- finding a job
- joining a social group
- help with everyday tasks

Headway Gippsland is a registered NDIS provider and we can coordinate and develop full support packages.
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS is for people aged between 7 and 65 years old.
You need to live in Australia, and
- be an Australian citizen
or
- have a Permanent or Special Category Visa
You need to have a permanent and significant disability that affects everyday activities.
There is also early intervention eligibility to help those with a disability that is likely to be with them for life but could be improved with extra help.
Who decides who is eligible?
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) decides who is eligible for the scheme as they provide the NDIS.
Are you eligible?
Participants
We say eligible people are participants of the scheme.
Participants can start using the scheme when
- they have consulted with an NDIS representative about their first plan
- and the first plan is then approved.
