On Australia Day, our South Coasters group came together in Wonthaggi to enjoy a relaxed day of connection, conversation, and community.
With the sun shining, participants spent the day playing games of UNO and bocce, sharing laughs, and enjoying a BBQ together. It was the kind of day that felt easy and familiar — unhurried, inclusive, and welcoming.
One of our lovely volunteers, Sue, even brought along some home-grown zucchinis, which were sliced up and cooked on the BBQ. It was a small but thoughtful contribution that added to the warmth of the day — and the food was delicious!
Moments like these remind us that community isn’t built through big events alone. It’s created through shared experiences, simple routines, and being able to show up as yourself.
A Sense of Belonging
For many participants, social support groups provide a regular opportunity to connect with others in a supported and welcoming environment. The weekly rhythm of meeting together helps people build confidence, develop social skills, and feel a genuine sense of belonging within their community.
Our South Coasters group in Wonthaggi is one of the ways we support people to stay connected, enjoy meaningful activities, and feel part of something they look forward to each week.
Support That Makes These Moments Possible
Behind days like this is support that feels reliable, respectful, and centred around each person.
Everyone’s support journey looks different. Some people enjoy connecting through group activities, while others prefer one-to-one support or a combination of both. What matters most is that support fits into everyday life and reflects what’s important to each individual.
At Headway Gippsland, our role is to support these moments — whether that’s through social groups, one-to-one support, or other services — in ways that feel comfortable and empowering.
Looking Ahead
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for Australia Day and to the volunteers and staff who helped make the day such a positive one.
Community connection is at the heart of what we do, and we look forward to sharing more moments like these from our groups and programs across Gippsland.
