My Story, My Voice
This program began with funding from the Latrobe Community Health Service in 2017, where a group of 8 participants came together each week to write their stories. To document how they acquired their ABI, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
This program was extremely successful with each participant receiving a booklet with all their stories. Many had indicated an interest in sharing their stories more widely so in 2018 the Trafalgar & District Community Bank Branch provided further funding to continue the ‘My Story, My Voice’ program which in 2019/20 has seen participants meet and develop their public speaking skills. Then sharing their stories with groups in the community to provide education, raise awareness and allow the wider community to see the person behind the disability.
These talks have been incredibly well received from schools and community groups alike.
Following COVID-19, instead of shelving further talks we have utilised Zoom and will continue interview style presentations online, allowing these stories to reach a much wider audience.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Trafalgar & District Community Bank Branch for their ongoing support and thank each and every one of the participants for being courageous and sharing their very personal stories. Thank you to Kerryn for facilitating this process.
